Moka Pot
/Definition:
A Moka Pot is a stovetop coffee maker that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through ground coffee. It produces a strong, rich coffee like espresso, making it a popular choice for home brewing.
Due to the different sizes of Moka Pots on the market you will need to experiment to find out how much coffee will fit in the brewing chamber to find out how much water to use.
Basic Brew Recipe:
Ratio: 1:10
Brew time: 5 minutes ±
To make your Moka Pot:
NOTE - the below is for a 3 cup moka pot, change the weights of water and coffee depending on the size of your pot using the brew ratio of 1:10 as a starting point.
Fill the bottom chamber of the Moka Pot with 200g of water, up to the safety valve. DO NOT fill above the safety valve.
Add 20g of finely ground coffee to the filter basket, leveling it off without pressing it down.
Assemble the Moka Pot by placing the filter basket into the bottom chamber and screwing the top chamber securely on.
Place the Moka Pot on a stovetop over a low heat.
Wait for the water to boil and create pressure, pushing the coffee through to the top chamber. You will hear a hissing sound when it's almost done.
Remove the Moka Pot from the heat once the top chamber is full of brewed coffee and no more liquid is being pushed through into the top chamber.
Pour the coffee into your cup and enjoy.
Extra tip:
For best results, use preheated water before adding it to the Moka Pot. This helps achieve a smoother and sweeter taste. Also, once the chamber has filled, it’s good practice to run the base of the Moka Pot under some cold water – this is to stop the extraction in its tracks (make sure to not get any in the top chambers)
Adjust the recipe to your taste by altering the ratio of coffee or water. Once perfected, you can repeat your recipe, maintaining consistency for great tasting coffee every time.
